  CHAPTER ONE

“Katherine are you seriously telling me you are going on honeymoon on your own?”

Katherine couldn’t help smiling, Nicole, usually so calm and collected, looked like she was going to blow a gasket. “No, I’m going on holiday... on my own.”

“Yes, but to the same place, same hotel, same room you’d have been in on your honeymoon, on the same dates. Kat seriously, won’t it just remind you of all that could have been, all you’ve lost?”

Katherine touched her arm, looking around her living room. “What and this doesn’t Nicole? Everything about my life here reminds me of Tanya.”

Katherine found her thoughts once again drifting back to the day a few weeks before. She had come home early. Tanya had been hassling her to be more involved in their wedding arrangements, and the date was fast approaching, Katherine had decided to surprise her, and surprise her she did!

Walking into the flat she could hear laughter. At first she thought Tanya must be on the phone, then she realised she wasn’t in the living room or kitchen and that she could hear another voice, a man’s.

Katherine took a deep breath, anticipating and steeling herself for what she would find before she saw it. Pushing open their bedroom door she saw Tanya, naked except for a lacy bra, astride Logan her friend. Logan was lying on the bed naked, his hands around Tanya’s waist as he fucked her. Tanya had her head thrown back, clearly in the moment.

Looking back Katherine didn’t know how she had managed to stay so calm. “Get dressed and get out, NOW!” She walked out the room slamming the door behind her. Muffled sounds could be heard as they pulled themselves together. Logan rushed out buttoning up his shirt as he walked, a guilty look across his face as his gaze met Katherine’s and quickly moved away. He said nothing, clearly anxious to get out the flat.

Katherine waited and Tanya soon appeared, now fully dressed. She walked towards Katherine who was sitting on the couch and sitting next to her she leant over to touch her. Katherine instantly pulled away. Tanya’s expression was guilty and sad, her tone soft. “I’m sorry Kat, I didn’t mean you to see that.”

Katherine looked at her, her expression controlled and her voice calm. “Clearly! Tanya when I said get out I meant you too.”

Tanya looked surprised. “Oh come on Kat, you know that was just my last fling with a guy, it didn’t mean anything. It was just sex, you know it’s you I want, you that I love.... you that I’m marrying. Logan is just...... Logan, a friend.” Tanya tried to pull Katherine towards her but she pulled away again, anxious to put space between them.

“With benefits obviously, but not anymore Tanya it’s over. A last fling...with a guy. You know how insecure I’ve been in the past over your bisexuality, and you reassured me that you wouldn’t miss men. Its all been rubbish hasn’t it?”

  Tanya looked crestfallen.

  Katherine spoke louder. “Hasn’t it?”

Tanya swallowed. “Its never been about men or women Kat, it’s not that simple. If I’m honest you’ve thrown yourself into your work lately... and left me to organise everything about the wedding, its made me insecure.”

Katherine was exasperated. “Oh, so its my fault you’ve been unfaithful, I was marrying you for god sake? I was working, someone had to pay for the damn thing, particularly as costs were rising daily, you have expensive tastes. Tanya you should have talked to me.”

Tanya sat back, her legs drawn up, her knees resting on her chin. “Hm.... and you’ve been so approachable!”

Kat couldn’t hold back her anger. They had made love the previous evening and talked afterwards, the thought now made her feel nauseous. How many times had this happened, and in their bed? Tanya had had every opportunity to talk to her. “Tanya stop making this about me. You needed to talk to me, oh and for the record I organised the honeymoon... totally, all the details.”

Tanya stood up. “Yes, to Crete, you didn’t even listen to me about that.... I wanted Los Angeles, but you were obsessed.”

Katherine looked confused. “But you know how long I’ve wanted to go there. I thought you agreed it would be more romantic, and that we would go to L.A. later this year?”

“Hmm agree, I didn’t have any choice, you were fixated with the idea, you always have been. You’re twenty-seven Kat, I don’t know why you haven’t gone to Greece before, it’s not as though it’s the other side of the world.”

Katherine was incensed. “Maybe because I always did what my friend or partner wanted, this time for my honeymoon I wanted a say.”

“Well you got it, but it was never what I wanted.”

There was silence for a minute as they looked at each other, until Katherine broke it. “If that’s true then I’m sorry, I certainly didn’t plan to push something on you that you didn’t want...but it doesn’t matter now, it’s over Tanya, the wedding’s off.”

Tanya burst into tears. “You can’t be serious Kat, I love you.”

Kat laughed, standing up. “No, you don’t Tanya, if you really loved me I wouldn’t just have found you fucking someone else... and in our bed. How low can you get, is nothing sacred? God knows how often this had happened. Pack your stuff, I want you out of here by this evening.” Katherine was glad that this was her flat, Tanya had moved in with her, but never contributed, even to the bills. She had only brought a few possessions with her, they planned to move her belongings from Auckland after the wedding.

Tanya looked upset, she moved towards her, reaching out to her. “Kat please, you can’t mean that!”

Katherine stepped backwards, avoiding any physical contact, Tanya disgusted her and her face evidently showed this. “I mean it Tanya, it’s over.”

Tanya looked at her defeated, she walked slowly back towards the bedroom, grabbing a case and quickly filling it with clothes. Katherine could hear drawers and wardrobe doors slamming. Five minutes later Tanya wheeled her case into the lounge, her face pale and her eyes blotchy from crying. From sounding angry and she was now resigned and upset. “Where do you expect me to go?”

Katherine looked at her. “That’s not my concern, but you’ve got lots of friends. I’m sure Logan will put you up....... you can finish what you started!”

Tanya just looked at her, tears falling from her eyes. Walking out the door she slammed it behind her.

  CHAPTER TWO

  “Are you really
sure about this Kat? It’s not too late to turn back you know.” It was 7 a.m. on Saturday morning in September, a few weeks later and Nicole was driving her to the airport.

“Nic please, don’t worry I’m a big girl, I can look after myself.”

“I know you can Kat.” Nicole had been impressed by how Katherine had handled the last few weeks, far better than she expected she would have if faced with the same circumstances. Katherine had cancelled all the wedding arrangements, and fought off continual attempts by Tanya to get back with her. Including changing the locks on her apartment after Tanya, who claimed not to have keys, appeared naked in her bed one morning. She had to hand it to Tanya, she certainly hadn’t given up easily. Nicole was the only one Katherine had told that she was still going to Crete, she imagined Tanya’s face when she found she had left.

Nicole knew Katherine had loved Tanya, but if she was honest she was relieved they hadn’t married. Nicole knew she could do much better. Katherine was a beautiful girl, naturally so, where Nicole spent a lot of time, and in her opinion, too much of Katherine’s money trying to look good. Kat was just naturally gorgeous, at 5 foot 9, she was thin but had curves in all the right places, her shoulder length blonde hair was thick and shiny, with tight curls. Her pale skin flawless and her eyes a very pale blue surrounded by long lashes. What was also very attractive was that she didn’t realise how beautiful, or the effect she had on others, men and women. If she wasn’t my friend I would hate her. She was also a good catch. Kat’s inability to recognise all this only added to her attractiveness, she thought herself average.

Aside from how she looked she was incredibly caring, which had made it difficult for her to treat Tanya badly despite what she had done. There were a few times in recent weeks when Nicole had worried that Tanya playing the sympathy card would result in Kat taking her back, but Kat was steadfast. Whilst she didn’t want to hurt her, this was the woman that she had intended to marry, given their past experiences they had discussed and agreed to be faithful to each other. Tanya being so blasé about breaking this vow was probably the one thing Katherine couldn’t forgive, a last fling in their bed was unpardonable. If Tanya really knew her she should have known that.

They arrived at the airport and Nicole lifted Kat’s case from her boot. Placing it on the ground she hugged her. “Skype me Kat, you know I’ll worry.”

Katherine returned the hug. “Of course Nic, and thanks, I don’t know how I’d have managed without you these last few weeks.”

Nic hugged her to her tightly. “You would have, you’re strong Kat, you always underestimate yourself, but I’m your best friend, that’s what I’m for. Have a great time and I’ll see you in three weeks.”

Katherine smiled as she disappeared through the airport doors, waving behind her. After checking, in and going through passport control and security, she breakfasted in one of the many food outlets, looking out at the planes taking off and landing. Much as she didn’t want to, she couldn’t help her mind at times drifting and thinking how it would have been had Tanya been there, but she shrugged. I know I’ve made the right decision.

On the plane, she watched a programme and read her kindle before falling asleep. She woke to the Captain speaking. “Hello, it will be 10 minutes to landing, the temperature outside is 25 degrees, and the time is 3:30 pm, one hour ahead of the UK. I wish you all a good stay in Crete and we will welcome you back on the return journey.”

Sitting at the window Kat looked out at the azure sea, the beaches, the low houses and the boats bobbing around on the water. Her excitement grew by the minute, it was all she thought it would be and more. Within an hour she had collected her case and was in the private taxi heading to Aghios Nikolaos, an alternative to the tour bus. This was just one of the extras that she had planned given it was their honeymoon.

The taxi driver spoke excellent English and the 30 minutes flew by as they had the usual discussions about where she was from, why she had chosen to come here, and the places he recommended that she see.

Before she knew it, she had arrived at the hotel Orion. She had chosen it because it was in the hills above the town, manageable on foot, but out of the way to allow for relaxation. The best of both worlds, hills and easy access to the nightlife, nightlife which appealed more to Tanya. Getting out the taxi she looked at the building, it was exactly as she had anticipated, an old Greek house over 4 floors, with blue painted shutters and multi-coloured flowers everywhere she looked. Behind it she would see the blue sea. Katherine felt her spirit begin to calm from the tensions of the previous months as she took it all in, and breathed deeply, taking in the clean sea air.

Katherine wheeled her case into the hotel lobby. Looking around she could see it was simply but elegantly decorated. It had cream floor tiles, a beautiful mahogany desk rather than the usual bar like reception, a matching round table in the middle of the floor with a display of flowers, and what she thought to be watercolours of the locality. Through the window behind the reception she could see the sea. She looked at the receptionist as she raised her head from the paperwork she was examining.

Adrienne stood up and looked at her guest as she heard her arrive. Speechless, she took in the incredibly attractive female in front of her, taking in her height, figure and porcelain skin. Wow I could look into these blue eyes forever. Adrienne loved her blonde hair, and its tight curls. Surrounded by dark haired Greeks these differences attracted her. She felt moisture gather at her centre and had to concentrate to prevent herself blushing. Adrienne’s immediate impression was that the woman looked pale and tired, but a few weeks in Crete should deal with that, she had come to the right place.

Adrienne cleared her throat and smiled. “Welcome to the Hotel Orion. Please do not hesitate to ask for anything, this is a family run hotel and we will do all we can to ensure that your stay is as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.”

Katherine observed the woman in front of her. There was only one word to adequately describe her ‘beautiful’, with long dark wavy hair, olive skin and large dark brown eyes framed with incredibly long lashes. She was slightly shorter that her, and standing behind the desk, which prevented her taking in all her body, but what she could see was voluptuous, her large breasts straining at her black uniform shirt. Her lips were full and red and her nose small and cute. God she’s gorgeous. With difficulty Katherine drew her eyes back to her face. “Thanks, I’m really looking forward to it.” Kat could see her name badge, Adrienne.

Adrienne looked at the paperwork in front of her, her heart sank as she suddenly she realised that the stunning women in front of her was one half of the honeymoon couple she was expecting. How could I have forgotten, I’ve only just put the champagne in the bridal suite?

She looked up, confused. “Sorry, it says here to expect two guests under that booking....a Mr......”

Katherine smiled. “Yes, it was but it’s only me, the other... Mrs.... Taylor won’t be coming.” Adrienne watched as she looked down. “Actually, there isn’t one, we ended things.”

Adrienne didn’t know what to think, on one hand she was elated, the woman was gay, on the other she had just ended a serious relationship, the sadness evident on her face. Ah that explains her pallor. “Okay well let’s get you settled into your room. As I said before, anything we can do please do not hesitate to ask. I am the manager of the hotel, please ask for me if you need to.”

Kat smiled. “I will, thankyou...” Her eyes lowered again to Adrienne’s breast, taking in the name on her name badge. “Adrienne, what a beautiful name.”

  Adrienne blushed “Thankyou.”

Adrienne called the porter who led her to the lift and showed her her room. Katherine looked around, it was fabulous. There was a tiled floor, cream walls and mahogany windows on two sides of what was a corner room. A kingsize four poster bed with white linen piled with lace cushions, an antique mahogany wardrobe, matching bedside cabinets, a cream couch, chair and coffee table still left space in the room. The windows and doo
r to the balcony were also mahogany.

Walking out on to the large balcony she realised it was on two sides of the room, with both a sea and mountain view. It was stunning, the terrace had two rattan loungers and space for a matching couch and chair. Kat could see already imagine herself writing there.

The bathroom was large with a jacuzzi bath, a separate rain shower and a further window looking out to sea. Dressing gowns, slippers and huge fluffy towels were folded on glass shelves.

For a minute Katherine allowed herself to think how much Tanya would have loved the room, particularly the jacuzzi. Despite a lump in her throat I’ve no regrets, I had a lucky escape, I’m glad I discovered her true colours when I did.

Katherine tipped the porter and unpacked her case. She noticed the champagne in the ice bucket and a bowl of olives next to it. Finishing her unpacking she opened the champagne and took a glass onto the balcony. She bit into an olive, loving the salty taste on her tongue, while taking in the view. Katherine found her thoughts moving to the gorgeous hotel manager, her body beginning to throb gently as she thought of how her shirt fitted tightly against her substantial breasts. She shook herself out of her reverie. Kat that is the last thing you need, and there’s no way she is gay.

  CHAPTER THREE

Going down for dinner the first night Katherine found Adrienne acting as Director, showing guests to their tables. She watched as Adrienne looked up from her computer and a beautiful smile spread across her face.

  “Ms Taylor.”

Kat returned the smile. “Please it’s Katherine.”

“Katherine.” Adrienne liked the sound of that on her tongue. “Call me Adrienne.”

Kat couldn’t help herself. “Adrienne, it suits you.”

Adrienne felt herself going red again, remembering the reference earlier to her name being beautiful. “Thankyou. Would you like to be inside or outside?” Adrienne suddenly realised the double entendre. “....I mean a table... for dinner.” Her blush increased. God, she will think I’m an imbecile.
